Building ShiftMate: From a Rental Room Idea to a Live SaaS With Paying Users

Every product on the TFLYX roster traces back to ShiftMate. It's the first production SaaS I shipped solo, and it's still the one I use to explain what "software shipped solo" actually means in practice, not as a tagline.

The problem, before it was a product

ShiftMate exists because staff rostering for shift-based businesses — F&B, retail, salons, clinics, gyms — is still done the hard way for most small teams: a spreadsheet, a WhatsApp group, and a business owner manually checking who's free, who's on leave, and who worked too many closing shifts in a row. That's not a hypothetical pain point. It's documented — a Free Malaysia Today / Kintone survey of 506 professionals in KL this year found too much manual work is the single biggest productivity drag Malaysian office workers report, ahead of complicated systems or too many tools.

A 2025 university research paper went further, studying a real Malaysian ambulance-service company still running staff schedules and salaries through Excel — and documented overstaffing, missed schedules, and payroll calculation errors serious enough to justify building a replacement system. That's the exact failure mode ShiftMate was built to remove.

What ShiftMate actually does

No app download required for staff. That constraint shaped almost every product decision — if a cashier or barista has to install something to see their shift, adoption dies. The output has to land wherever people already are: Excel, WhatsApp, a screenshot.
